Fan or Follower: Confession is Good for the Hypocrite
Matthew 23: 1-12

Seventy-Two percent of unchurched Americans feel that Christians are hypocritical.  In other words, we don’t practice what we preach. We talk the talk, but don’t walk the walk.

Action: Talk with an unchurched/non-churched friend or family member about how they view Christianity. What do you learn from the conversation? Is there anything you can change about how you present your faith in order to be a gracious witness for Jesus’ love?

Prayer: I confess that I have been a hypocrite this week. I have said one thing and done another. I have proclaimed to be a Christian and acted like a pagan. I have been like the Pharisees who were bad examples to others and did not practice what they preached. I have been greedy and self-indulgent, neglecting the more important matters of justice, mercy, and faithfulness. Forgive me for inverting my priorities and grieving your spirit within me. Forgive me again this week Lord. I repent of my sin again, and ask you to increase my desire to obey you. “Create in us a clean heart. Renew a steadfast spirit within us. Restore the joy of your salvation. And grant us a willing spirit to sustain us.” (Psalm 51) Amen.
