Give All You Can
1 Timothy 6: 17-19
John Wesley says that a key to understanding his advice to “give all you can” is the idea that we are temporary stewards of what belongs to God. When we give to others, we are not giving what is ours, but we are acting as God would by sharing our resources.
Action: Review your finances with Wesley’s guide for giving: Provide first for what is needed for your health and strength; next provide for all those in your household; finally, provide for the household of faith, and those in need in your community. Make a plan to bring your finances into alignment with your needs (not wants).
A Prayer for Making Purchases this Holiday Season (based on John Wesley’s sermon): Lord, you see I am going to expend this sum on that food, apparel, furniture. I do this with a single eye as a steward of your goods, expending this portion of them in ways that are consistent with the design you had in mind when you entrusted them to me. I do this in obedience to you. Let this purchase be a holy sacrifice, acceptable through Jesus Christ. And give me a witness in myself that for this labor of love I shall receive a reward when you judge everyone according to their works. In your name I pray, amen.
